The George of Stamford

The George of Stamford is one of Britain’s most historic inns. Situated next to the River Welland on the ancient Great North Road, a hostelry has stood here for around 1,000 years and an entire book devoted to the life of this grand former coaching inn would easily be possible.

It’s not surprising, then, that as you enter The George you immediately sense its history – the interior and exterior are full of character that has built up over the centuries like the bark on an ancient English oak. It is also one of just a handful UK hotels to have appeared in every edition of the Michelin Guide since 1911.

Traditional hospitality and service, plus a commitment to quality are at the heart of the approach. You’ll feel like a lord as you sink into the sofa in the Lounge and the waiter takes your order for a pre-meal G ‘n’ T (or maybe you’d prefer a full afternoon tea – it’s a perfect place to enjoy one). The centrally located lounge is seriously comfortable and there is an air of relaxed luxury. There is also a slightly formal feel throughout this hotel – The George is very much in touch with its traditional values.

Food and drink are, of course, crucial elements in the recipe. There’s a large menu of UK and European classics available for both lunch and dinner. The bright, airy and convivial Garden Room is a space that’s cosy in the winter and wonderfully summery during the rest of the year. For a more formal – and grander – setting, try the Oak Panelled Restaurant (there’s a dress code).

If you really strike it lucky with the weather, it’s real treat to dine in the beautiful Courtyard. There’s also the York Bar, where you can enjoy a bar snack and a pint of cask beer.
