Baked in Brick
Regulars at street-food events such Leicester’s Canteen and Digbeth Dining Club will be familiar with Baked in Brick. Their skewers, pizzas and more have always proved popular and they were named Best of the Best at the European Street Food Awards 2017.
Building on that success, they opened a restaurant at The Custard Factory in Digbeth. The design is urban and edgy, but there’s a warm welcome and a cheerful, unpretentious air about the place.
The menu focuses on pizzas baked in the open kitchen’s brick oven. Options include serrano ham and Lincolnshire Poacher with rocket; or oak-smoked chicken, bechamel sauce and boulangere potatoes. We tried their European award-winning calzone with beef shin ragu and wild mushrooms – a beautiful dish that pleased all the senses. It was a delight to prise open and let the ragu gently pour out and to dip the crust in a delightful dip made from Colston Bassett Stilton.
There are specials including a pasta dish plus terrific fresh salads and sides. There is also a first-class selection of craft beers.
With such quality at under £10 a pizza, it all adds up to a compelling offer.
