Castle Cottage Cafe

Just off from the busy marketplace in Oakham lies this classic English tearoom. It’s a haven of tranquility from breakfast to teatime. A big draw when the weather’s fine is the beautiful rear garden, something that sets the place apart. But the pretty and well-thought-out interior and excellent food are the biggest reasons to visit. Happy customers use words like “magical” and “charming”.

Breakfast could feature a Rutland sausage sandwich with bangers supplied by Nelson’s Butchers of Oakham, scrambled eggs with smoked salmon, or Greek yoghurt with homemade fruit compote and granola. At lunchtime you might want to tuck into a triple-decker club sandwich of chicken, avocado, Nelson’s ham, rocket, tomato and wholegrain mustard mayo, or maybe a simple toastie made with bread from Rutland’s Hambleton Bakery. Fully licensed, wine is also available.

Then, of course, there’s the traditional afternoon tea. You could choose the full works or enjoy a simple pot of Earl Grey with a slice of something.

Watch out too for the special candlelit suppers. Once a month the café – and during the summer the garden too – is transformed into a twinkly, romantic scene in which to enjoy two or three courses of fine food. These sell out fast, so be quick. Castle Cottage also hosts wine-tastings run by Ben and Emma Robson from Bat and Bottle.

  2. Hannah Stanion says:

This is a lovely cafe with beautiful outside space and very good food and coffee.

  3. SR says:

Very nice spot for tea, coffee and general relaxation. Hidden away but worth seeking out.

  4. Pat Dalby says:

Often call in for delicious cakes and tasty cuppa, but sandwiches just as good. Always difficult to decide which to go for. Old fashioned walled garden lovely to sit in during summer, with plenty of seating and throws to keep you warm. Ample room inside, but might be difficult for someone with mobility problems to get to upstairs or downstairs tables, although there are restricted tables inside the entrance. If you’re a regular it’s worth picking up the loyalty card. Staff always very pleasant. In my view definitely the best café in Oakham.

  5. Paul Taylor says:

Hidden away in a back alley near the parish church, Castle Cottage is easily missed but it is worth making a detour to enjoy the delights of this quirky café. I regularly drop in on Saturdays for one of the best cooked breakfasts around including local butcher’s sausages and toasted Hambleton Bakery bread. They also serve a delicious range of sandwiches and a platter with savoury scones and Stilton, which my wife loves. In the summer there is a nice garden to sit in, though seating in the indoor café is a little restricted.
