The Castle House
The Castle House feels like a country retreat but is actually a privately owned city centre boutique hotel. Steeped in history, it has a great story to tell.
It has won many deserved accolades over the years because it offers customers a special experience while regularly exceeding expectations. Local farmer David Watkins
owns the hotel. He’s proud to see his own produce from nearby Ballingham Hall Farm on the menus – the farm has been in David’s family for over 120 years.
Talented executive head chef Claire Nicholls’ loves to use ingredients sourced from trusted local suppliers. Claire is a Herefordshire girl but she’s travelled too, and her experience of living in the Far East influences her culinary style. The imaginative, innovative menus change often, reflecting seasonality and the versatility of the kitchen team. They always present dishes thoughtfully and the restaurant’s long-held two AA Rosettes are, no doubt, the result.
Guests can choose to eat in the à la carte Castle Restaurant, overlooking the old Hereford Castle moat, or in the more informal Ballingham Bar & Bistro, which has an all-day dining/snack menu. Weather permitting, you can also eat al fresco on the pretty garden terrace.
The Castle House also serves some of best cocktails in Hereford, specially created by George Watkins, the owner’s son, who works at the hotel between tending his pedigree herd of Herefords at Ballingham Hall Farm.
