Duncan Murray Wines of Market Harborough, Leicestershire, is an independent specialist wine merchant (2012 UK Independent Wine Retailer of the Year) with a passion for south European wines.
Founder Duncan lived in Montpellier in the Languedoc region of central southern France in the late 90s, where he built up knowledge of the region’s wines and got to know many winemakers personally. He worked for winery Domaine du Poujol and planted vines that produce wines which Duncan sells in his store today – Jazz and Podio Alto.
These days he visits southern Europe regularly and imports directly from many producers, some exclusively. “Southern Europe has such a range of fabulous native grape varieties and brilliantly food-friendly wines,” he says.
“L’Estabel Red from Cabrieres and Chateau Du Vieux Parc Selection from Corbieres [a white with a similarity to Chateauneuf-du-Pape Blanc] are exclusive to us in the UK,” says Duncan. “They are out of this world and the white will surprise you – it goes amazingly well with Stilton.”
Duncan is also passionate about Portugal and in 2010 won the Portuguese Independent Wine Merchant of the Year award.
It’s this passion, knowledge – and the fact he can offer levels of service only an independent outlet can – that makes Duncan Murray Wines a shop that should be on every local wine-lovers’ radar.
Duncan Murray also loves local food and drink, and has a fantastic selection of ales from Langton Brewery of Thorpe Langton (which produces a beer exclusively for Duncan called Duncan’s Drop), Grainstore of Oakham, Phipps of Northampton, Wicked Hathern (which make a Bavarian-style lager for us called ‘Harbrau’) and Nobby’s of Thrapston. He stocks ciders from local maker Saxby, and sparkling wine from Welland Valley Vineyard of Marston Trussell. He also has a cracking local gin selection featuring Two Birds of Market Harborough, Burleigh’s of Nanpanton and Warner Edwards of Harrington.
There’s a free tasting session at Duncan Murray Wines every Saturday from 12-3 (apart from the last few dates before Christmas). Meanwhile, most of the ‘behind-the-counter’ spirits are open if you fancy trying something a little different.
