Gonalston Farm Shop & Deli

As a child, did you ever dream of being locked in a sweet shop with instructions to simply enjoy yourself? The thought of being given free rein in Gonalston Farm Shop & Deli is the grown-up equivalent. Few farm outlets in Britain are as vibrant or offer the sheer breadth of high-quality produce.

Shelves are crammed with locally sourced delights and Great Taste Award-winning products, including gluten-free options. There’s also a fantastic fishmongery, superb butchery, bulging drinks section, fruit and veg galore and an award-winning cheese and deli counter. In addition, Gonalston is a stockist of the famous Big Green Egg, described as “the ultimate outdoor cooking experience”.

This is not your typical farm shop and it’s clear that a huge effort is made by proprietor Georgie Mason and her passionate team to stock the best, and to offer an unrivalled food shopping experience.

Reflecting that hard work, Gonalston’s deli section was named Britain’s Best Independent Cheese and Dairy Counter in the 2012 World Cheese Awards. Impressively long, it showcases more than 100 handmade farmhouse and artisan cheeses, from local favourites such as Cropwell Bishop Stilton, recently reintroduced Colwick and Cote Hill Blue, to Swiss cave-aged Gruyere and past Cheese World Champion Ossau-Iraty from France.

Gonalston began life over a decade ago when Georgie, after months of painstaking research, opened a small shop on her beef farm. The surrounding fields still provide grazing for beef sold in the shop and Georgie is committed to sourcing locally and supporting the local food and drink community.

In a feature looking at Britain’s 50 Best Farm Shops, The Independent newspaper wrote of Gonalston: “The range on offer here is quite phenomenal… They really do have everything you could need, and a fair amount of what you don’t but would probably enjoy. Running the full gamut from meats to fruits and veg, plus a great deli, the real distinction here is the on-site fishmongers, not at all typical of rural farm shops.”

  1. Rebekah Maxwell-Atkin says:
No longer a farm shopAs a regular customer of the farm shop I was disappointed with the refit which combines the original business with Budgens. Now don’t get me wrong, as a supermarket that stocks local produce, this is a really good outlet, unfortunately though it’s no longer a farm shop. The formerly magnificent fish counter has shrunk beyond recognition and has been conciled to a corner of the store almost as an afterthought, the cheese counter a similar scenario. The butchery counter and fresh veg do remain excellent however but many of the lines supplied by those niche suppliers have either disappeared or are lost amongst the supermarket produce. I’m sad that such a pioneering farm shop seems to have lost its way but I do wish it well in its new incarnation.
  2. Anne Taylor says:
Farm shopThis is one of the best farm shops I have been to. The fish, cheese, meat and bakery are all high class, all the staff are very friendly and helpful, the lady on the fish counter even took time to show me how to fillet a sea bass - we will be definitely be returning.
  3. Frances says:

Gonalston Farm ShopFantastic range of fresh fish, butchery department second to none and always a great range of everyday foods. The team are always on hand to help and advise, nothing seems to be to much trouble, all in all a great place to visit and shop.
  6. Elaine Bateman says:
Guaranteed service and qualityI love this place, everything they sell is delectable. The meats, cheeses, bakery and fish are all extremely high quality and there is lots of variation. The staff are very helpful and welcoming. There are always things to try and the deli staff are always happy to give you a taste of anything before you buy. Just a warning - never go there when you are hungry as you will come out with lots of random stuff and a very battered bank balance (or maybe that is just me.)
