Gonalston Farm Shop has undergone a face lift, becoming the first farm shop in the UK to team up with national brand Budgens. Most of the shop’s 80 local suppliers are still present, but new to the range are frozen ready meals from Cook, plus an array of convenience brands. “We have teamed up with Budgens because they enable us to offer a strong convenience range at a competitive price, but we still stock an array of local produce, including meat from our own farm,” says owner Georgina Mason. “We are still a 100% independent farm shop and continue to support many small and local producers. Our butchery counter has not changed at all.”

The deli counter, which offers a large range of artisan cheeses and more, is supported by a new kitchen. A new fish counter next to the butchery now operates every day of the week, showcasing fish that’s delivered fresh each day. The fresh fruit and veg section is as strong as ever, with lots of locally sourced produce – but the addition of a frozen section gives greater choice, making the new-format Gonalston more of a one-stop shop.

Customers can still enjoy the high-provenance Gonalston Farm-produced and locally sourced meat from the butchery, with the addition of some innovative new products packed on site.

Bread from Hambleton Bakery is available, alongside major label breads.

As a regular customer of the farm shop I was disappointed with the refit which combines the original business with Budgens. Now don’t get me wrong, as a supermarket that stocks local produce, this is a really good outlet, unfortunately though it’s no longer a farm shop.

The formerly magnificent fish counter has shrunk beyond recognition and has been conciled to a corner of the store almost as an afterthought, the cheese counter a similar scenario. The butchery counter and fresh veg do remain excellent however but many of the lines supplied by those niche suppliers have either disappeared or are lost amongst the supermarket produce.

I’m sad that such a pioneering farm shop seems to have lost its way but I do wish it well in its new incarnation.

  2. Avatar Anne Taylor says:

This is one of the best farm shops I have been to. The fish, cheese, meat and bakery are all high class, all the staff are very friendly and helpful, the lady on the fish counter even took time to show me how to fillet a sea bass – we will be definitely be returning.

  3. Avatar Frances says:

A great farm shop. Lots of locally sourced groceries and meats. Good deli items and an exceptional fish counter. Good value and good service.

    Fabulous farm shop

  5. Avatar Stephen burrup says:

Fantastic range of fresh fish, butchery department second to none and always a great range of everyday foods. The team are always on hand to help and advise, nothing seems to be to much trouble, all in all a great place to visit and shop.

  6. Avatar Elaine Bateman says:

I love this place, everything they sell is delectable. The meats, cheeses, bakery and fish are all extremely high quality and there is lots of variation. The staff are very helpful and welcoming. There are always things to try and the deli staff are always happy to give you a taste of anything before you buy. Just a warning – never go there when you are hungry as you will come out with lots of random stuff and a very battered bank balance (or maybe that is just me.)
