Homme Nouveau sits in the market square of the Fenland town of Whittlesey, six miles east of Peterborough. Chef and owner Chris Newman (Homme Nouveau means “new man”) is a local lad who’s worked his way around the area before fulfiling his dream of opening a restaurant in his home town.
On our lunchtime visit, we enjoyed a tasty plate of beef & chorizo meatballs, linguine, arrabbiata sauce and garlic crostini, plus a risotto of pancetta and peas topped with a poached egg. We finished with an indulgent sticky toffee pudding featuring a lovely light sponge.
The evening menu is more ambitious, promising dishes such as Duck Breast with Carrot Purée, Poached Carrot, Roscoff Onion, Duck Crumb, Potato Fondant and Port & Orange Jus; or Fisherman’s Stew comprising Cod Supreme, Sautéed Potatoes, Chorizo, Bean, Tomato and Shrimp Cassoulet, Basil Pesto and Samphire. The latter was inspired by a trip to San Francisco. There is also Chris’s take on Waldorf Salad using salt-baked celeriac.
Expect some surprises on the desserts list, such as ‘When Life Gives You Lemons’ starring lemon curd, lemon meringue, lemon sorbet and candied lemon, finished with Raspberry Chantilly.
Homme Nouveau also offers an excellent Afternoon Tea of homemade scones and cakes.
