I’m Real Ice Cream
Sabrina and Tony Brindisi have gelato in their DNA. Their grandfather moved from Italy to England in the 1960s and built a gelato business in Northamptonshire. The business passed on to Sabrina and Tony’s father, and next to them. In their capable hands, they continue the family tradition of producing traditional Italian gelato, but with new flavours for a 21st century audience.
High quality ingredients are the backbone of the business. They use only local milk and cream and, where possible, natural ingredients that are locally grown or made. There are no artificial flavours, colourings or preservatives, just Northamptonshire milk and cream, cane sugar and many imaginative flavours. I’m Real products are made to the traditional Italian gelato recipe and therefore use a higher proportion of milk, a lower proportion of cream and are churned at a slower rate. This makes them rich, smooth and creamy without excessive sweetness – they contain less fat than English ice cream but this does not compromise the texture or flavour.
There are nine flavours in all – and we have dutifully tried them all. The strawberry gelato is packed with fresh, clean flavour; the toasted peanut butter has an added dimension from the toasting; and the chunks of nut in the coffee and walnut add wonderful taste and texture. The tasters were divided over their favourite – the salted caramel crunch is a perfect balance of homemade caramel and honeycomb, while the banana, cardamom and white chocolate is a really interesting and moreish combination of flavours. But the vanilla got a big thumbs up from everyone because it was so flavoursome, balanced and far from plain.
The I’m Real range is stocked in farm shops and retailers in Northamptonshire. Regardless of which you prefer, you will be thankful that Sabrina and Tony continued in the gelato business. Buon appetito!
