Kavanagh’s Tea Room
Kavanagh’s Tea Room opened in 2017 in the delightful building formally known as Buttercross House. Following substantial refurbishment, it has been transformed into a light, airy and pretty tea room complete with vintage china.
Clare and Martyn are very much hands-on owners, with Clare baking all the cakes as well as the cobs for lunchtime sandwiches’ – delicious, by the way. Other breads are from Hambleton Bakery, and ham comes from Nelsons Butchers. Yes, there is a wide and tasty selection of cakes, which make this the quintessentially perfect spot to take afternoon tea, but there are also light breakfast and lunchtime menus, excellent and well-made coffee, as well as a wide selection of teas. Kavanagh’s opens as a bistro on Friday and Saturday evenings, too.
Apart from that it is a lovely building to visit, with several different rooms and a pretty little garden. Kavanagh’s is a very welcome addition to Oakham’s growing number of small, independent businesses.
