Kavanagh’s Tea Room

Kavanagh’s Tea Room opened in 2017 in the delightful building formally known as Buttercross House. Following substantial refurbishment, it has been transformed into a light, airy and pretty tea room complete with vintage china.

Clare and Martyn are very much hands-on owners, with Clare baking all the cakes as well as the cobs for lunchtime sandwiches’ – delicious, by the way. Other breads are from Hambleton Bakery, and ham comes from Nelsons Butchers. Yes, there is a wide and tasty selection of cakes, which make this the quintessentially perfect spot to take afternoon tea, but there are also light breakfast and lunchtime menus, excellent and well-made coffee, as well as a wide selection of teas. Kavanagh’s opens as a bistro on Friday and Saturday evenings, too.

Apart from that it is a lovely building to visit, with several different rooms and a pretty little garden. Kavanagh’s is a very welcome addition to Oakham’s growing number of small, independent businesses.

  1. Kerry Alford says:
Amazing!I took my friend here for a birthday afternoon treat and we weren't disappointed, the selection of teas, cakes and sandwiches exceeded my expectations. Both the tea and food were delicious and i cannot fault this little place at all. Very quaint little cafe with beautiful decor. I will be a regular for afternoon tea that's for sure.
  2. FH says:
Awesome! We had dinner at Kavanagh's on one of their bistro evenings. The food was amazing and wonderful value too. The service was brilliant, and they are so friendly and enthusiastic about what they create and offer. We had all three courses of the bistro menu - it was a squeeze, but the food was so good, you had to have all three! We will certainly return, and have already told all of our friends what a fabulous meal we had there - Kavanagh's should be very proud of what they have created since they opened earlier this year, and also of their Chef - she is very talented. We haven't tried the daytime food there yet, but we certainly will do. We can't praise this place enough, if you are looking for somewhere in Oakham for a meal out on a Friday or Saturday evening, then this is definitely the place to go - it knocks the socks off everywhere else, and you certainly won't be disappointed!
  3. Victoria Redshaw says:
Heavenly!Whether you want breakfast or cake, or merely a cup of tea, this is the place to come! Super, friendly service makes this place stand out above other establishments in Oakham. Don't forget their afternoon teas and bistro nights too.
  4. Diane says:
Love this place - it's adorable!Visited on one of the rare summer days when you could sit outside. Delightful gardens, great staff, good cakes and sunshine. What more you could ask for?!
