Loaf Community Bakery and Cookery School is an exciting combination of cookery school, artisan bakery and dynamic pop-up café.
Cookery courses held in this modern, well-kitted-out venue on Pershore Road include Bread: Back To Basics, Simply Sourdough, Basic Preserving, Forage and Cook, and Butchery: Perfect Poultry.
Founder, baker and director Tom Baker explains: “The courses at Loaf focus on the skills I feel my generation has lost, that used to be part of our food culture – skills like baking, foraging and butchery.”
The artisan bakery runs alongside the cookery school. Loaf is also celebrating its recent success and expanding to sell cookery equipment, books and specialist ingredients. Tasty lunches, freshly brewed coffee and loose-leaf tea will also be available to take-away. These will be available on weekdays from 12 noon.
“We’re proud to bring real bread back to Stirchley,” adds Tom. “We make beautiful wholesome bread slowly, with passion and care, without artificial additives. We specialise in sourdough (rye and wheat) and other artisan breads such as brioche and ciabatta.”
Fabulous Baker Brother Tom Herbert named Loaf as one of Britain’s best five bakeries in a 2013 article written for Telegraph Magazine.
In addition to the baking and cookery courses, the Loaf team works with like-minded Birmingham food and drink entrepreneurs to put on pop-up events such as burger and noodle nights, coffee ‘brewhouse’ mornings and breakfast clubs. Check Loaf’s website to see what’s coming up.
Loaf was founded in 2009 by the then 27-year-old Tom, who set up a cookery school in the kitchen of his terrace home near Stirchley. Three years later, Loaf arrived on the high street after Tom formed a partnership with Leicestershire’s Everards Brewery.
