Loki Wine is a buzzing independent wine shop in Birmingham’s Great Western Arcade run by a friendly, helpful and knowledgeable team who clearly love their work. It is a winner of Decanter Magazine Wine Merchant of the Year outside London and is unstuffy, welcoming and fun.
Founded by approachable and enthusiastic wine expert Phil Innes, Loki Wine is home to ingenious self-service sample machines that feature all sorts of interesting bottles. On walking into the shop you can get a Loki Tasting Card from behind the till and use it to try the wines in the sample machines. You simply enter the plastic card into one of the slots, choose the size of the sample (anything from a mouthful costing around 50p to a full glass for several pounds) and quaff away. The card records what you try and you pay before leaving. It’s a great way to ensure you actually like the contents of any bottles you buy. It’s also a great way to try some legendary wines that you wouldn’t ordinarily sample.
Upstairs at Loki Wine is a tasting room where you can chill out with a glass (40 wines by the glass are available at any one time). The shop also hosts regular wine-tasting events.
