The Malt & Anchor
The Malt & Anchor in Cirencester focuses on fish & chips, sausages and pies. It does a superb job of all three.
Imagine the crispest, driest, lightest batter possible. Wrap it around fresh, sustainably sourced (MSC-certified) cod and haddock. Then serve it up in a cool, cosy and classy restaurant that mixes cocktails and even offers its own bottled pale ale – Hooked. That’s what you get here. It’s fish & chips but on a different level.
You can boost your mushy peas to contain ham hock and leek (highly recommended!). ‘While You Wait’ options include Champagne-pickled quail eggs. And the ‘Proper Scampi’ – large langoustine tails in a light breadcrumb, served with twice-cooked chips, lemon wedge and homemade tartar sauce – might be the best you’ve ever had.
Award-winning pies are sourced from Pieminister of Bristol, and the sausages come from Jesse Smith Butchers of Cirencester.
This restaurant – which also offers takeaway – was named Best UK Newcomer in the National Fish & Chip Awards 2018. It was also a Finalist in the ‘Restaurant’ category in 2019. It’s not hard to see why.
