Mill Street Pub & Kitchen

The first impressions of Mill Street Kitchen are deceiving. The spacious interior appears slightly impersonal at first, but once you are seated the experience is quite the opposite, with excellent customer focus and attention to detail.

The menu is extensive and varied, but it is only when the plate is in front of you that the quality and care becomes apparent. Presentation is excellent and the flavours are exciting and sometimes unexpected.

The kitchen sources local produce where possible, including meats from the Peterborough Game Company and trout from Rutland Water. The chefs create daily specials as well as regular dishes which change bi-monthly. Breads and ice creams are freshly made in-house.

We enjoyed perfectly cooked salt and pink peppercorn Cornish squid with oyster mayo and sea herbs, as well as sea bass and beef in ciabatta. Whipped Melton Mowbray Stilton with cider caramel, pickled walnuts and apple was an unexpected starter and one we will be having again. All dishes were fresh, packed with flavour and delicious.

Desserts were equally impressive – complicated techniques brought together in tasty and aesthetically pleasing dishes. We were persuaded to have the pina colada trifle with coconut shortbread – not our normal choice, but we were converted!

The wine list is interesting and eclectic, there are plenty of real ales including beers from Oakham’s Grainstore Brewery, and gin lovers have lots to choose from. Cocktails and mocktails are on offer too.

This is a friendly restaurant with a professional approach serving good quality food and drink in the heart of Oakham.

  1. Victoria Redshaw says:

Friendly staff were unable to make up for the poor, stodgy, over cooked food. The menu looks delicious, but the kitchen didn’t follow through. We will not be returning.

  2. Ali says:

Four of us visited Mill Street Kitchen for Sunday lunch, we had a great meal, great service, complimentary wine, thank you GFC and relaxed afterwards by the fire with coffee. A lovely afternoon with friends.

  3. Keith says:

Lovely meal, excellent service, reasonable price & excellent bottle of FREE wine – for four. Also, discount vouchers for future meals.

  4. LJR says:

Great evening for 8 of us to catch up and enjoy the atmosphere. Fantastic food and drinks. Asked about the Great Food Club Offer – declined as we were a table of 8 and not 4. The group were a little uncertain of the logic and were very disappointed/embarrassed after having the Great Food Club offer denied. I showed our card. LJR

This issue has now been resolved. Mill Street Kitchen does indeed offer two complimentary bottles of house wine for tables of eight with a GFC member present. However, they made a mistake on this occasion, which they’ve now fixed.

  5. Rona menzies says:

Lovely lunch at the weekend with a pal… perfect prosseco, fab food and special super service!

  6. Neal Addison says:

Visited the Mill Street Kitchen on a Sunday morning for breakfast. I had the Full Monty, a very hearty breakfast for those with a big appetite. I went for the poached eggs as my choice, which were cooked to perfection. The atmosphere was very relaxing complete with an open fire.
