Mill Street Pub & Kitchen
The first impressions of Mill Street Kitchen are deceiving. The spacious interior appears slightly impersonal at first, but once you are seated the experience is quite the opposite, with excellent customer focus and attention to detail.
The menu is extensive and varied, but it is only when the plate is in front of you that the quality and care becomes apparent. Presentation is excellent and the flavours are exciting and sometimes unexpected.
The kitchen sources local produce where possible, including meats from the Peterborough Game Company and trout from Rutland Water. The chefs create daily specials as well as regular dishes which change bi-monthly. Breads and ice creams are freshly made in-house.
We enjoyed perfectly cooked salt and pink peppercorn Cornish squid with oyster mayo and sea herbs, as well as sea bass and beef in ciabatta. Whipped Melton Mowbray Stilton with cider caramel, pickled walnuts and apple was an unexpected starter and one we will be having again. All dishes were fresh, packed with flavour and delicious.
Desserts were equally impressive – complicated techniques brought together in tasty and aesthetically pleasing dishes. We were persuaded to have the pina colada trifle with coconut shortbread – not our normal choice, but we were converted!
The wine list is interesting and eclectic, there are plenty of real ales including beers from Oakham’s Grainstore Brewery, and gin lovers have lots to choose from. Cocktails and mocktails are on offer too.
This is a friendly restaurant with a professional approach serving good quality food and drink in the heart of Oakham.
