I’m always keen to support family-run businesses, so I was delighted to accept the offer to meet Axel and Sophie Steenberg in North Yorkshire.
In case you don’t know, Steenbergs is a family-run artisan spice company. It specialises in the ethical sourcing and hand-blending of spices, teas and home-baking ingredients, focusing on organic and Fairtrade and always following the founders’ passion for provenance, aroma and taste. Steenbergs also stocks a range of eco-friendly household and kitchenware products in line with its aim of reducing plastic packaging in favour of paper. The company was set up in 2003 and has moved three times over the years. HQ today is a purpose-built, eco-friendly factory just 200 yards from where it all started.
The aroma in Axel and Sophie’s warehouse is amazing, and their colourful array of peppercorns from red to white was hugely exciting for this cook. Among the spice blends, I noted the organic hot-cross-bun mix, blended in Yorkshire – perfect for Easter baking. I’m a massive fan of tea, so was thrilled with the tea tasting after my warehouse tour. What a selection! The soothing bamboo leaf with slight lemon taste, and the quirkily named Happy Hippy tea – a blend of pink rose flowers and yellow chamomile tops with a hint of mint – were my favourites.
You must go and check out their vast range of teas and I suggest you try the white tea with lemongrass and orange blossom – blissful.
Steenbergs products are stocked in various health-food outlets across the country and are available online, with free UK postage and packing on orders above £30.
