Blink and you’ll miss it. You’ll find Stones Restaurant perched on the edge of the River Derwent, tucked away down a set of unassuming steps by the side of the Derwent Bridge, opposite Matlock train station. Stones is run by husband and wife duo Kevin (head chef) and Jade Stone, along with sister Katie, so is very much a family affair. It’s clear to anybody who visits just how passionate they are about their restaurant.
Stones is a great all-rounder, offering AA Rosette fine dining in stylish surroundings. The restaurant is light, airy and elegant. It’s small but doesn’t feel cramped. Not only is it perfect for romantic date nights and family occasions, it’s also an impressive spot for a business lunch. If you just fancy a glass of wine on the riverside terrace during a summer’s evening, it’s good for that, too.
Stones’ menus showcase modern British classics. The presentation is stunning, with cooking and flavour to match the aesthetics. The bespoke Vegetarian menu is excellent and the Tasting menu is always worth considering: eight delectable courses paired with matched wines.
