The Angel Bakery
Having celebrated its first birthday in 2017, The Angel Bakery in Abergavenny – that little Welsh market town internationally renowned for its annual food festival – is everything an artisan bakery should be. With light, contemporary, quirky decor, it is a complete delight to visit. Producing excellent sourdough, totally delicious viennoiserie and an ever-changing selection of speciality breads, the team are real enthusiasts and true artists. Their sourdough starter began life in London, but it evolved in Abergavenny, changing flavour completely due to natural differences in the Welsh atmosphere, resulting in a unique flavour that is not overpowering yet gives a subtle earthiness.
Daily sandwich specials are also mouthwatering; one memorable filling was locally sourced pulled lamb with mint aioli tucked between pillowy focaccia – absolute sandwich heaven! The brioche is also outstanding, better than most I have tasted in France, and the classic sourdough makes for the best toast.
Do make sure you visit early, as like all good bakers, they often sell out! Pop in for a barista-style coffee and a croissant or pain-au-chocolat, pick up some bread for dinner and inhale the mouthwatering aromas that fill the air. You certainly won’t regret it – the staff are really friendly too!
