With its own kitchen garden and passion for high-quality local sourcing, The Barnsdale near Oakham is a gem for food lovers. Its dining credentials are further enhanced by its close relationship with many local suppliers, including Manton Farm (asparagus, raspberries and strawberries) and Hambleton Farm beef, which rears its longhorn cattle on the Hambleton peninsular, two miles from the hotel. Barnsdale’s own hens provide eggs.
Originally owned by the Gainsborough family since 1760, 46-bedroom The Barnsdale, which also boasts 17 two and three-bedroom self-catering retreats, was formerly a farmhouse and was converted in 1989.
Fiona Duncan, writing in The Daily Telegraph, said: “The Barnsdale is comfortable, welcoming, and for the quality of the public rooms and the assiduousness of the service, the room rates are a really good deal.”
