The Chequers Beerhouse in Stevenage’s charming Old Town is a wet pub brimming with character. It’s managed by the welcoming duo Lauren and Martin, the pub has become a local hub for real ale lovers. It’s also very dog-friendly too according to Bob, their four-legged partner known as the “the real boss.”
The Chequers is tied to Greene King but is independently run and and this means it’s all about great ales. There’s generally a mixture of big national brews such as Abbott and Old Speckled Hen, or big regional players such as Oakham or Wadworth. But if you time it right, you should be treated to a good selection of locals too. Regulars include Tring Brewery, 3 Brewers of St Albans, New River and Mad Squirrel.
Watch out for open mic nights, beer festivals and regular quizzes. Plus if you pop down on a Wednesday for the Cask Club, there are discounts to be had too.
This is a real community pub in the heart of Stevenage, and well worth a visit if you’re in the area.
