The Llansantffraed Country House Hotel & Restaurant
One of Monmouthshire’s hidden gems, Llansantffraed Court is a stunning privately owned William and Mary manor house with foundations dating back to the 12th century. Set in its own grounds a short drive from Abergavenny, this boutique-style country house is the perfect place to celebrate that special occasion.
The lunch and dinner menus change daily, with the set menu of three courses (with one or two surprises) being my personal choice. There is also a longer tasting menu and accompanying wine flight for those seeking something extra special.
The restaurant sources 80% of its produce locally, and with some superb internationally renowned producers virtually on the doorstep, it has plenty to work with. Seasonal fruit and vegetables are grown in the dedicated kitchen garden.
There is wonderfully old-fashioned decadence to the place, although the decor is contemporary. It’s generally quite quiet, especially on weekday evenings when the diners are mainly hotel residents. The dining room is a calm oasis of creams and whites with old beams overhead.
The service is always excellent and the staff really know their food and drink. In summer you can dine on the elegant terrace overlooking the formal garden with its dancing fountains and stunning views across the countryside. Or, after a winter dinner, enjoy a digestif beside one of log fires. Guests are always made to feel extremely welcome and although formal, it’s a great place to relax.
Menus are seasonal and best described as modern British. Welsh lamb, rare-breed pork, perfectly seasoned (and cooked) sustainably sourced fish and some extremely naughty puddings all make for a truly gourmet dining experience.
