The Mad Turk offers wonderful home-cooked-style Turkish Cypriot food, and the people of Stamford have taken it into their hearts as if they’ve wanted nothing else for decades. Maybe it’s because the presence of a traditional Turkish meyhane contrasts so unforgettably with Stamford’s ancient stone buildings, dreamy spires and ye olde English pubs.
British Farm Quality-Assured Red Tractor meats are cooked on a mangal (charcoal barbecue): The Mad Turk is definitely a carnivore’s dream but there are plenty of vegetarian dishes available too. And you don’t have to go the whole hog when ordering: it is also a good place to enjoy a light, relaxed mezze with a glass or two of what you fancy – on offer are a range of Turkish wines, Efes beer and raki. The snack option particularly suits Saturday afternoons, when The Mad Turk opens from noon.
The food is delicious, from the hot mezzo starters (the Borek – pastries filled with feta and herbs – is particularly good), through to the authentic kebabs and desserts (try the baklava). Don’t come here with anything other than an empty stomach. And if you fancy testing your appetite’s mettle, try the Ottoman Feast.
