British village pubs don’t get much more classic-feeling than the ivy-clad Martin’s Arms, which was named County Dining Pub of the Year in the Good Pub Guide 2014-18 inclusive.

Hidden away just a few yards from Colston Bassett’s famous Stilton dairy, it’s a Grade 2 listed enclave of comfort, good beer, and superb food. Once you enter the front door, you won’t want to leave.

The decor is traditional and comfortable: squashy banquet seating, feather cushions, hunting paintings and a Jacobean fireplace festooned with food trophies. A roaring fire crackles in the laid-back bar area when conditions are appropriate, and in the dining rooms beautiful antique furniture and silver candlesticks create a grander air.

The Bar is home to six real ales – including at least one brewed in the vicinity (Castle Rock’s Harvest Pale on our visit) – and boasts an impressive wine list.

Great Food Club’s reviewer said: “A real gem – a haven of good taste and tranquility, offering top-quality food”.

Four for weekday lunch. Having read some reviews we were disappointed. Good ambience and good service but the food less good. Scallop starter very average, pheasant greasy, chicken succulent but lacking flavour. Seems it tries to copy fine dining restaurant – served canapés pre starter – but certainly on this occasion didn’t achieve it.

This is the perfect place to come on a cold winter’s day – when we arrived there were two log fires burning. The interior is wonderful – a proper traditional pub with fox hunting paintings and dark furniture. There is a separate dining room which is where we went for our meal (having had drinks in the lovely bar area first). We were so impressed with the food – more high-end restaurant standard than pub food. I chose a pie which tasted wonderful – and it was a proper shortcrust pastry pie with bottom, sides and top! My partner had the pork and he said it was the nicest he’d had for a very long time. There was a good wine list too, and the staff were very helpful and friendly. We cannot recommend this place enough. It is worth driving out to. You will not be disappointed.

We had a lovely meal with friends on a cold January Saturday evening ! It’s a cosy traditionally styled pub with roaring fireplaces.
The Bavette steak was cooked to perfection with good portion of chips followed by chocolate pave and pear dessert – all fabulous !
    We will definitely return
