The Plump Partridge
The Plump Partridge opened its doors for the first time in July 2015. Owned by father and daughter team Justin and Fay Partridge, it is a calm oasis right in the heart of Northampton.
The coffee house is open for breakfast and lunch. The lunch menu offers salads, flatbreads and wood-fired pizzas. Pizzas available when we visited included ‘James and the Giant Peach’, ‘Some Like It Hot’ and ‘Notting Hill’ (a pizza containing Portobello mushrooms, which I think is genius naming!)
What really impressed me when we visited was the attention to detail – in the drinks, food and decor. On one of the walls there was a blackboard that explained the importance of heating the milk for coffee to an exact temperature. Too hot and the milk starts to taste bitter – it needs to be just right to get the correct level of caramelisation to complement the coffee.
My coffee of choice is always a mocha – I’ve got a bit of a sweet tooth. I don’t mind admitting that I was a little confused when they asked me what kind of chocolate I would like in my mocha. They showed me the jars behind the counter that contained four varieties of chocolate. After asking their advice I went for the Classic, which was a chocolate from Equador with 70% cocoa. It made a delicious mocha. My plan is to return soon to try out the different varieties.
