The Riverside Inn
Riverside Inn head chef Andi Walker made a big impression on Master Chef: The Professionals in 2015 when he reached the semi-finals. He is now bringing his not-inconsiderable talent to bear at this 17th century former watermill in Chelmsford. He and his team have created a great gastro pub and fine-dining restaurant.
During lunch we were impressed by the big flavours, showcased in dishes such as our starter of crispy chilli beef salad, which had bite and zest, and was packed with just the right amount of heat. To follow, a huge maple-glazed pork chop – sourced locally – had been brined and cooked to perfection, and was served with a terrific bubble and squeak. Our table also enjoyed a lovely piece of cod served with an earthy butter-bean and chorizo stew. Deserts continued to please, with a honey parfait, bitter caramel and honeycomb.
In the evenings, Andi and his crew serve up a five-course tasting menu, which further showcases the skills on show in The Riverside kitchen and the team’s passion for great local, seasonal ingredients.
This fine young chef deserves the support of Chelmsford!
