The Stamford Arms

The Stamford Arms stands tall and proud set back from the road in the large Leicestershire village of Groby (pronounced ‘Grooby’).

Owned by Everards Brewery, this is an honest local pub serving honest food rather than gourmet cuisine, plus good local ales. It is a pubby sort of place in the traditional manner and has piped music. Don’t expect high-end dining but do expect good-value, tasty food in a relaxed setting.

In May 2013 it was subject to a £450,000 refurbishment and where once a ten-pin bowling alley used to exist there is now a dining room, kitchen, state-of-the-art pizza oven and gleaming pasta-making machine. The chefs, who prepare pizzas and more in view of customers, cook with some locally sourced ingredients, and the bar staff pull pints of beer brewed just a few miles down the road. The Stamford Arms even has its own house ale – Lady Jane – a nod to the fact the pub used to be part of the estate owned by the Grey family, also known as the Earls of Stamford.

The Stamford Arms was once the home of Everards Brewery’s 19th century founder, but the pub is now tastefully modern. Where William Everard once ate with his family you’ll now find an airy, bright and roomy space. The refurb has brought out the best in the high ceilings.

There’s a vast choice of seating, from Chesterfield sofas and armchairs through to more pubby benches and raised tables with bar stools. You get a feel of laid-back comfort, and mums meeting for coffees will feel just as welcome as dads hooking up to watch the rugby over a few beers. In fact, that something-for-everyone approach is the overriding theme: there’s space for diners but there’s also a dartboard, a TV, and a welcoming area for drinkers. There’s even a cosy old-school boozers’ snug next to the bar. This is a pub for both diners and drinkers.

The full Everards range of ales, plus a few guests beers, are available.

  1. Karen M. says:
Great Pub!I've dined and drunk here, and it's a great pub. It has a spot for everyone, whether you are a large group or small, there's a nook for you in this pub. They have a great outdoor space at the back as well, that you can't see from this photo, and its a reasonably quiet area as well. Food was great, managers/bar staff are friendly and very attentive. Do try it.
