The Urchin is a superb shellfish and craft beer pub located a few yards from the sea. It serves some magnificent seafood.
Take clams with cherry tomatoes and chilli, swimming in a wonderfully flavoursome broth and served in a beaten copper hinged set of pans, so the shells can be discarded and conveniently stowed.
For our main we had crab, again served in this copper contraption but this time its contents was so large it was like trying to cram a piano into a car boot. This giant crustacean also came in a wonderful broth – this time Korean spiced. We had the customary set of tools to work our way through the beast’s carapace, and some bread to soak up all that precious broth. With care and a judicious approach, we managed to successfully complete the job with clothes intact. Just. But what a satisfying dish this was.
To accompany this piscatorial feast we enjoyed a refreshing Mandarin & Blood Orange IPA, which was brewed on site.
The Urchin is all about sourcing great local produce and serving it simply but with respect – what good cooking is all about.
We can’t wait to pack our bucket and spade and get back to Hove!
