Tom’s Cakes, Cambridge

Tom Dolby has a café and shop in bustling Mill Road in Cambridge at the city end near Parker’s Piece, and another in the former Toll House in St Ives.

In the summer, the garden in the Mill Road shop is the perfect place in which to enjoy the wonderful baked goods on sale here. They are open for breakfast and lunch and also have a delicious range of savouries.

Tom is from a baking dynasty, with the family opening their first bakery in 1803. Beginning his apprenticeship in the family business, Tom then travelled the world learning his trade before starting his own venture.

Every cake and biscuit they sell is handmade in small batches using natural ingredients from scratch in their Cambridgeshire bakery. Eggs are free-range and sourced from local farms, the flour is milled in Essex, and the vegetables come from the Fens. Fruit is also from local farmers and their lavender from Norfolk.

Tom likes to follow the seasons, so expect delights such as a summer lavender cake or an autumn Bramley apple and cinnamon cake depending on when you visit.

They take their coffee seriously, working with renowned Monmouth Coffee Company who also train their baristas. Local business Kandula Tea from Wilburton supply their tea.
