Vivia Crump’s Chutney
From a small kitchen in Rutland, Vivia Crump and her team produce a range of six chutneys.
The business grew because so many friends enjoyed Vivia’s homemade chutneys and encouraged her to produce in bigger volumes and sell them. She now makes enough to take a stall at London Southbank Centre Food Market, to sell from shops in Rutland and via mail order from the website – but the care and quality remain the same. Vivia carefully sources ingredients through a local supplier, uses only top quality vinegar, eschews additives and preservatives, and prepares and cooks by hand in small batches.
Vivia creates the recipes by putting as much thought into the colours and textures as the taste, and it is this approach that makes the chutneys that little bit different. As Vivia says, we “taste” first with our eyes, so she ensures her products look brilliant – inside and outside the jar.
Not wishing to confine the chutneys to cheese sandwiches and ploughman’s, each flavour comes with suggestions for pairing. The Bramley Apple & Date has a touch of ginger, so is an excellent partner to curries, and the Pear & Walnut with Rosemary is superb with lamb. Try the Red Chilli & Pineapple with a fried breakfast to kick start your day, or take it a step further and use the chutneys as a brush-on sauce – the best-selling Lemon & Mustard is recommended on roast chicken to add a wonderful flavour to the skin. If you visit the Southbank stall you can also enjoy the chutneys cooked into sausage rolls and vegetarian rolls, packing punch and flavour from the inside out!
After meeting Vivia, we were inspired to be more adventurous and to use the chutneys as a store cupboard staple rather than an occasional accompaniment… it opens up a whole new world of flavours and recipes.
