Archer’s has been a fixture on bustling Queen’s Road in Clarendon Park since 1918. Current owner Sean Jeynes (pictured above), who has run the business since around 2000, says his aim is to combine the kind of old-fashioned personal service that has disappeared from so many shops, with an innovative, forward-thinking approach to butchery. That means he and his team work hard to source the best meats they can from Leicestershire and beyond, all the year round.
There’s Gloucester Old Spot pork from Church Farm in Croft, free-range chickens from Packington in Staffordshire, beef from a variety of south Leicestershire farms, game from local shoots, plus Welsh Salt Marsh lamb and fantastic rare-breed Herdwick lamb.
“It can be a challenge to find the best animals out there and we are always on the lookout,” says Sean. “If that means driving up to the Lake District to get Herdwick lamb, that’s what we’ll do. If there are any farmers out there with great produce who want to get in touch – please do!”
Archer’s has also garnered a great reputation across Leicestershire for its South African specialities. Sportsmen from Leicester Tigers and the county cricket club are known to beat a path to their door to stock up on biltong, boerwors and droewors. You will also find five or six varieties of homemade British banger, too. Watch out for Archer’s hog roast at special events and sometimes outside the shop.
