The Wheel

The Wheel is a down-to-earth, friendly and welcoming village pub. It hasn’t forgotten how to be an honest hostelry, but is also passionate about good food, high quality beer and making customers feel loved.

Charming, compact and family-run, this free house (it used to be a Batemans pub, as the old signs show) serves impressive, locally sourced food, often via dishes you wouldn’t expect from a village pub.

Walkers are welcome (so are dogs – in the bar) and you won’t be made to feel naughty for treading mud into the quarry tiles and wooden floorboards. The decor is simple, as is the furniture, and the place is kept spotlessly clean.

Great Food Club’s reviewer wrote: “On visiting for Sunday lunch, we chatted with the staff and a few locals and were impressed by the warm atmosphere, literally and metaphorically.”

Three real ales are available and the regularly changing chalkboard menu offers a range of exciting creations, with starters like crispy pig cheek salad; baked apple, goats’ cheese and walnut salad; and Jerusalem artichoke soup with pub-made bread.

Commenting on the food, our reviewer also said: “The soup was beautifully thick and delicious, and the goats’ cheese salad was lovely and warm, with the soft acidity of the baked apple working well with the walnuts and highlighting the creaminess of the cheese.”

Impressively, much of the pub’s veg comes from an allotment in nearby Knipton.

Great Food and Great AtmosphereWent to the wheel on Wednesday and had some great food! Started with a lovely pint of Brewsters Decadence which was fantastic. I then had a starter of devilled kidneys which were delicious. For my main I had the ribeye steak which I recommend to anyone. Best steak in the Vale next to a roaring fire.

  8. Ruby Godfrey says:
Relaxed. Great foodHave been meaning to write about a superb Sunday lunch a few weeks ago. The beef was sublime, the Yorkshire puddings light and moreish, lovely crunchy roast potatoes with fluffy insides AND the veg was an event rather than an afterthought. Lovely, creamy cauliflower cheese, sweet root vegetables and greens cooked to perfection. Having been brought up as a vegetarian (and now a committed carnivore), I often find veg side dishes unimaginative and poorly cooked. Definitely not the case here. Super gravy too and the steady hum of contended, relaxed conversation in the room all added to the ambience.
  9. Gareth Smith says:
Hard to beatWhen I take friends to the Wheel they are always impressed by the cosy and simple interior, a great selection of drinks, some creative and tasty food plus really caring and personal service. Best to book a table if it's the weekend. Enjoy.
