Member review: Sharmilee, Belgrave Road, Leicester

We decided to pop into Sharmilee on Sunday thinking that as it was only 12 noon, we’d be able to get a table easily. Not so! The place was already buzzing with families, a few couples and single people and a large table of lunching ladies.

Nargis, the young woman in charge, took pity and rearranged tables to fit us in and what a treat it turned out to be. Between us we tried the buffet and ordered from the menu and I have to say that the food was nearly as good as my mum’s (she was with us but she was really impressed too)! All of the dishes we tried were beautifully fresh and delicately spiced, with the option to add heat to the individual dishes through an array of fresh, lightly pickled vegetables and chutneys with fresh green chillies.

I personally opted for the buffet and tried pretty much a little of everything and have to confess that the paneer and dahi vada was some of the best I’ve ever had. And the srikhand (a lemon posset style dessert) was a delight – palate cleansing and light in texture.

We were made very welcome, the staff were polite and helpful and the atmosphere was very convivial. Sharmilee is a great place to experience traditional, home style vegetarian Indian cuisine.
