The Black Horse is the sort of pub you’d love to be your local. It’s warm, welcoming and comfortable. Stepping inside feels like you’re being transported into a restful world miles from the stresses of work. Antique hardbacks sit next to a sign advertising the monthly book club, polished brass glints at you from the bar, and the dark purple Chesterfield-style bench seats and dark wood furniture create an unusually opulent atmosphere for a traditional pub.

Alan and Sarah Merryweather from Nottingham are the married couple who have created this slice of pub paradise, in partnership with the building’s owner, Everards. They’ve transformed The Black Horse into a place that retains a lovely, traditional back-street pub vibe and yet also feels slightly – is this the right word? – luxurious.

Before they arrived the pub offered virtually no food but today it serves traditional pub fare: well-loved dishes such as homemade pies, fish and chips, and burgers freshly made in the kitchen. And it’s with the burgers that The Black Horse is making a name for itself. There are ten varieties on the menu, each made using lean steak mince supplied by local butcher Russell Smith of Cosby. The kitchen makes and serves up to 400 a week and they are spectacularly good.

I totally love everything about this place. As a retired restaurant and hotel assessor, I can truthfully say that this venue ticks all the boxes for great pub food and a cosy ambiance. The staff are always welcoming and helpful. I’m delighted to mention that they are ticking the ‘vegan options ‘ box as well. More food venues need to follow suit as this is definitely a growing area. I just wish Alan and Sarah would open up a place in Broughton Astley. There’s nothing worthwhile there, sadly.

  2. Avatar John Jones says:

Although and Everards house, the guest beers more than make up for this. Friendly publicans and staff. Well worth the trip out.

  3. Avatar Donna says:

Always enjoy eating here. Burgers are amazing and a vast choice of gins. The other half enjoys trying the guest ales.

  4. Avatar AGKM says:

Fabulously welcoming, great homely cooked comfort food, lots of real ales, ciders and nearly 100 gins. What’s not to like.

  5. Avatar BR says:

Simply a really good pub – top burgers and a cosy atmosphere. Their gin festivals are awesome too.

  6. Avatar Dawn Rawson says:

Enjoyed an excellent meal , food was delicious and hot. Service was good and very attentive. It was a cold day ,the log fire was very inviting.
I would definitely recommend this pub ,it is hidden away but surroundings are picturesque ,and relaxing.

I have eaten here several times and never been disappointed, the food is lovely, whatever you choose and they have loads of ciders and gins so don’t drive!
