This young Quorn-based business came about to bring fine, affordable Italian wines from small, family-run vineyards directly to the consumer. Founder Nick Robinson wanted to bring the wines of Italian producer Enrico Marcato – and those of other small, passionate, family producers’ wines – to the UK. His aim was to make them available to individuals, bars and restaurants who do not buy by the pallet-load.
So he launched Kilo Wines as an independent business to offer a relatively small, focused list that in the main showcases the more affordable end of Italian wines. Entry-level bottles such as the fruit-driven, well-balanced, easy-drinking Origini Primitivo from Puglia offer terrific value. Their Canella Prosecco and the Amarone-style Duo from Enrique Marcato are best sellers, while at the upper end, Barolo and Brunello di Montalcino also feature.
Minimum order is six bottles and orders before 12pm can generally be delivered locally the next day – often by Nick himself, who finds it an invaluable way of garnering customer feedback. Look out for Kilo Wines too at local food events.
