The Pack Horse, Hayfield
The Pack Horse is a popular gastro pub in the heart of Hayfield and is featured in the prestigious Michelin Guide.
Four of us visited on a Friday evening, having booked in advance – our table wasn’t quite ready, so we sat and had cocktails outside in the early evening sun.
The menu comprises exquisite fish dishes, fantastic cuts of meat from local award-winning Mettrick’s Butchers in Glossop, classic meals and contemporary offerings such as locally-picked St. George’s Mushrooms on Toast and the Manchester Egg (pickled egg with pork and black pudding).
It was a special occasion, so we treated ourselves to the Manchester Egg, Tongue Caesar Salad, Asparagus with Egg and Truffle, a delightful trout dish with fennel and the T-Bone sharing steak (not for the fainthearted). Starters arrived and all were divine, the mains followed swiftly, beautifully presented. The accompaniments and béarnaise sauce were delicious as was the wine to go with it.
This is a top restaurant experience in a bustling community pub atmosphere, offering quality cuisine with an ethos of sustainability. It’s certainly not cheap but there are special offers throughout the week and Wednesday is Curry & Quiz night.
