The winner is Public in Loughborough – a thriving, innovative, independent café and bakery serving exceptional coffee, fresh bread and pastries and brunches in a welcoming, character-filled space.
Public began life in Loughborough and now has three thriving coffee shops in Loughborough, Mountsorrel and Nottingham, with a fourth on the way in Leicester.

Built on a simple idea – great coffee, fresh bread and pastries baked in-house, and welcoming spaces full of character – Public has quickly become one of the region’s standout names. Their filled croissants, especially the Nutella version, enjoy cult status, while sourdough, tin loaves and focaccia underpin sandwiches that are a cut above.

The menu reflects Public’s balance of creativity and comfort. Think Weekend Brunch with pancetta, poached egg, roast cherry tomatoes, avocado and sourdough toast; Portobello Mushroom, Mature Cheddar & Truffle Oil toasted sandwich; or the indulgent Waffles topped with Nutella and banana. Everything is made with care, from the bread to the coffee, and it shows.

Public’s venues are housed in characterful buildings, designed as places to meet, work, or simply unwind. Stylish yet relaxed, they’re also ever-evolving – a reflection of a team committed to staying fresh and relevant. You’ll even find shelves of plants for sale, adding to the charm.

Our judges loved how Public combines excellence with accessibility, delivering top-quality food and drink in spaces that feel inviting and inclusive. That mix of ambition, innovation, craft and community spirit is why Public is our Café of the Year 2025/6.
