Leicestershire has beautiful countryside and some superb food and drink producers. Rather brilliantly, the Great Central Railway offers the chance to enjoy both through a variety of dining events on board its stunning steam trains.
The line passes within 300 metres of Rothley Wine Estate and The Rothley Rosé evening offers a three-course menu matched with five of the vineyard’s award-winning wines.
Winemaker Liz Robson does a fine job of talking guests through flavours ranging from the elderflower nose of the excellent High Hopes fizz to the refreshing, lemony King Richard white and the light-bodied, cherry flavours of the King Henry red.
Standout dishes included a superb duck terrine and a beautifully light chocolate cheesecake, matched with the gently sweet Battle Royal rosé.
From the glorious views over Swithland Reservoir to the plush seating, white-gloved service and soundtrack of clickety-clacks and toots, the experience is a fine showcase for Leicestershire.
The Great Central Railway also runs other dining experiences, including afternoon teas, cheese tastings, Sunday lunches and fish and chip suppers.
