Tucked away off the A606 between Melton Mowbray and Oakham, Northfield Farm Shop & Butchery is the epitome of a hidden gem. If you don’t know it’s there, you’ll drive right past — but missing it would be a foodie crime! With its outstanding quality, it’s no surprise the late Clarissa Dickson Wright counted it among her favourite producers.
We visited Northfield Farm yesterday to drop off some 2025 Great Food Club Handbooks and were reminded once again why this place is so special. Behind the counter was Piero, a fourth-generation Italian butcher from Puglia. Piero (pictured) is a master of his craft, creating exceptional charcuterie and sausages. His butchery counter is outstanding.

During our visit, Piero also showed us Northfield Farm’s aged beef — a thing of beauty! The commitment to quality and tradition is clear in every cut and product.
A key part of Great Food Club’s story
It was a visit to Northfield Farm in 2009 that sparked the creation of Great Food Club. We were impressed by the quality of this brilliant yet hidden food shop and asked ourselves: Why don’t more people know about places like this? That question led us to start GFC and shine a light on the best but under-the-radar food producers.

So, thank you to Northfield Farm for being a source of inspiration and for continuing to produce such exceptional meat and charcuterie. If you haven’t visited yet, put it on your list.
