Owen Taylor & Sons Butchers in Derbyshire

Last Friday, we embarked on a marathon 200-mile food tour through Derbyshire, and our second stop was at 100-year-old Owen Taylor & Sons Butchers in the suburban village of Leabrooks. This family-run butchery has been serving the community for over a century and stands out as one of the region’s most entrepreneurial food businesses.

Located within a row of terrace housing, Owen Taylor may appear modest from the outside, but behind its traditional shopfront lies a sprawling acre of butchery and bakery production — a Tardis-like space! This extensive facility caters to the local community and supplies hundreds of pubs, cafés, restaurant, and institutions across the East Midlands. If you’ve eaten a steak at an East Midlands restaurant, there’s a strong chance it originated from Owen Taylor, thanks to their partnerships with local farms.

Insights from the third generation

During our visit, we had the pleasure of enjoying a cup of Derbyshire tea with Richard Taylor, the third-generation managing director of Owen Taylor. Richard, who was recently seen at the Pie Awards in Melton Mowbray, opened up about the pressing challenges facing the butchery and hospitality sectors. One notable detail he shared is that the cost of a whole beef cow has risen sharply, now exceeding £3,000 — a staggering increase of more than 25% since the beginning of the year.

Richard Taylor

Richard’s knowledge extends beyond the traditional role of a butcher; he possesses a keen understanding of his clients’ businesses, which plays a crucial role in his operational strategy. As sharp as the blades used by his skilled butchers, Richard’s insights into the industry are invaluable.

Looking to the future

To enhance their operations and serve their clients better, Richard is in the process of building a new six-acre facility just down the road.

A legacy of excellence

Owen Taylor has thrived in the face of challenges and celebrated numerous victories in recent months. The butchers have been on a winning streak, proudly taking home gold medals at the British Pie Awards in March, as well as three gold medals at the Q Guild Smithfield Awards.

With an impressive legacy and a forward-thinking approach, Richard Taylor and his team are set to continue making their mark in the food industry. If you ever find yourself in Derbyshire, make sure to stop by and experience the offerings of Owen Taylor!
