Chez Sébastien Artisan Pizza, Melton Mowbray

The winner is Chez Sebastien Artisan Pizza of Melton Mowbray – a small, family-run business that produces wood-fired pizzas.

Our judges were impressed by the passion, care and attention to detail shown by Chez Sebastien. We also love its backstory: the business was inspired by co-founder Seb’s childhood in Marseille, where his family ran a pizza business in the 1970s. Over 40 years later, Seb and his wife Paula launched their pop-up takeaway and delivery service in 2018, determined to produce excellent pizzas using local ingredients.

In that, they’ve succeeded. They use organic British flour to make exceptional dough – hand-stretched and rested for 72 hours – and topped with carefully sourced ingredients, including top-notch British charcuterie, homemade tomato and BBQ sauce and seafood from the local fishmonger. They also offer gluten-free pizzas.

“We are committed to sustainability and using the best local produce available to us. We also use only free-range meat and UK produce,” says Seb.

Pizza connoisseurs will love Chez Sebastien’s creative, mouthwatering monthly specials that often (but not always) have a French twist. Past specials include Poulet d’Ete (slow-cooked free-range chicken, pesto, red onion, feta, fresh parsley and lemon juice); Lahmajoon Armenian Pizza; and ‘Tunworth’ (cream, mozzarella, Tunworth cheese, British oak-smoked chorizo and maples syrup).

Congratulations to all four shortlisted businesses.
