Jo Higgins is definitely a baker with a difference. She spent her early career teaching primary school children and in her spare moments she also painted. But after 23 years in the classroom, it was time for her to dedicate her energies fully to her creativity. She’s now a full time artist, but instead of using brushes and canvas, she uses icing sugar and chocolate! Her exquisite cakes and cupcakes are not just tasty, they look like floral displays. When you first walk into her Blooming Cakes shop in Belper, it’s hard to tell that the bouquets and plants are actually cake and icing!
As someone once said: “Is it cake?!”
Blooming Cakes describes itself as a ‘baker and designer of floral buttercream cupcakes, bouquets, boxes and floral Dome cakes’. Technically true of course. But Jo’s description of her products as ‘tiny, perfect, indulgent works of art’ feels much more apt! You can clearly tell that each one has taken time to produce, but also immense imagination to conceive.
Located on the ground floor of De Bradelei Mill in Belper, the shop feels more like a florist with beautiful displays all around. But Jo also runs workshops for budding bakers keen to learn how to perfect the floral buttercream piping.
