Jashir in Oakham is run by local restauranteur Nilesh Patel. Until 2023, it was located at The Royal Duke on West Road, but when the opportunity arose to move to the High Street, Nilesh couldn’t pass it up. Not only is it now a bigger venue, but it has become a higher-end restaurant than before, without compromising on atmosphere or price.
Because of his background, Nilesh specialises in Rajasthani cooking, but there is plenty of choice on the menu. There is a good range of sizzlers and curry-house classics too, but it’s definitely worth giving the chef’s specials a try. Whether it’s a Jashir Prawn Chili Masala, Goan Fish Curry or Tawa Bahar, there’s a great blend of traditional and contemporary dishes to choose from.
When Jashir first moved into the bigger premises, there was some initial concern that it would be too big. But with the quality of the cooking and the stylish interior, Nilesh and team haven’t looked back. And they have even opened a sister restaurant in Spalding, Lincs which we’ll be visiting soon!
