The Kite at The Red Hart in Hitchin is a very special place. The venue itself has been a pub and coaching inn since 1551 and these days it combines historic touches with modern sophisticated decor.
Owners Tom Weller and Ben Hedley describe it as “your archetypal neighbourhood gastropub”. Although that’s doubtless technically true, it definitely feels a bit more than that. From the pictures on the wall, to the furniture and the friendly staff, this is a very impressive establishment.
On tap, there are a regularly changing range of craft beers, including their own pilsner. There are cocktails on offer and a few excellent wines to choose from too.
But it’s the food that really impresses at Kite at The Red Hart. They are committed to locally sourced seasonal ingredients and won’t compromise on quality. And this really shines through in the food. Starters include delicious crab arancini and wonderfully thick French onion soup with Welsh rarebit. Main courses include pub classics like burgers, steak, fish & chips and also King oyster mushroom, Cornish hake or short rib & Guinness pie. Nothing leaves the kitchen without Olly ensuring the highest quality in flavour and presentation.
There’s plenty on at the pub such as tasting menu evenings, live bands, pub quizzes as well as bespoke events. Plus there is a good sized beer courtyard for summer evenings, and a private function room upstairs too.
So whether you’re just out walking the dog, planning a relaxing Sunday roast or wanting an upscale Wednesday night dinner, Kite at The Red Hart should definitely be on your list!
