Mee Blueberries (part of Mee Farmers) is run by husband and wife team Peter and Zoe Mee, with their children Charlie and Emily. Charlie’s fiancé Charlotte also works in the business; a real family affair!
The 700 acre arable farm, Lyveden is in the Nene Valley between the Northamptonshire villages of Nassington and Fotheringhay. Sustainability is hugely important for the Mees. New crop rotations are helping to attract natural predators and improve soil health, reducing the need for artificial fertiliser. Solar panels on the grain stores and a heat pump for the farm house are ensuring the business is powered naturally where possible.
In 2014, Peter and Zoe knew that in order for their arable farm to survive, it had to diversify. They decided to plant 15 hectares of blueberries under polytunnels. Five years later, they installed a brand-new blueberry processing facility and now produce enough blueberries to supply to leading supermarkets. But to avoid wastage they also freeze much of the ripe crop to develop homemade products. Their web shop offers a range of jams, chutneys, balsamic vinegars and juices. Sparkling wines and vodka & gin liqueurs are also available for online delivery!
Their innovative approach is being recognised at award shows too. In 2022 the they won Family Farming Business of the Year. And in 2023, their sustainable approach was acknowledged with FWAG East Conservation Farm of the Year!
