Sarpech in Oakham is a stylish Indian restaurant and wine bar. Set on the first floor of a town centre building, owners Raj and Ady have invested time and effort creating a welcoming, comfortable space where you can enjoy fantastic drinks, excellent Indian food and top-class service.
Climb the stairs and you enter the bar, where you may want to enjoy a beer, wine or cocktail as you study the menu. It’s a lovely room that works perfectly well as a standalone bar (bar snacks are served 5-7pm Tuesday to Saturday). It has exposed brickwork, natural wood and high quality furniture. We sipped our gin and tonics and gazed lovingly at the list of dishes.
After placing your order, you’re shown through to the restaurant – a laid-back, modern-feeling room with nice views of Oakham’s main street. There are nods towards Asian culture via artwork on the walls but the forced Indian theme so many curry restaurants opt for is missing in favour of a neutral, tasteful, relaxed design.
The icing on the cake is the food. There’s nothing out of the ordinary (except the Tandoori Ostrich, perhaps) but it’s all cooked beautifully and served lovingly, with clear pride. Poppadoms with three delightful homemade chutneys should not be missed and if you’re after a classic “Western” Indian dish, you might go for a Tikka Masala, Korma or Madras. We opted for the Vegetarian Combination for two as a starter, followed by the Lamb Tandoori Fillet and Chicken Palak. For dessert we shared a dense, creamy Kulfi. The food was subtly spiced and cooked well. The dining experience as a whole felt special yet relaxed.
The team have installed a gleaming new kitchen at Sarpech, showing their commitment to great food and dining goes well beyond the cosmetic – their investment and pride in their work deserves to pay off.
