The Bookcafe, Belper

The Bookcafe in Belper opened in June 2019 in a unique listed building, The Orangery, part of George Brettle’s hosiery mill, dates back to the 1800s. Belper’s older sister in Derby which has been in business since 2009, when they converted a nineteenth century bank into a city centre eatery.

The Bookcafe brand is very much based on being a quirky, friendly environment and you can see why. The interior is on two levels with a few tables downstairs near the counter, with further upstairs seating and an outdoor terrace too. Wherever you look there are bits of charming bric-a-brac, ornaments and, of course, books!

The menu is broad without being overwhelming. Breakfasts and brunches include pancakes, eggs, bacon rolls and ‘The Full Derbyshire’ (or veggie/vegan equivalents!). Lunch options include robust sandwiches and wraps, including Bhaji Naan-wich, Greek Souvlaki and staff favourite the ‘Yorkie roast beef wrap’.

The folk at Bookcafe pride themselves in high quality local ingredients and their food is cooked on site daily.

There’s also a huge range of coffees, iced teas, soft drinks and milkshakes. Plus if you fancy an afternoon tipple, there are plenty of wines on offer and bottled beers from Derby Brewing Co and Dancing Duck.
