The Merchant’s Yard in Tideswell is a smart, welcoming restaurant, bar and boutique hotel in the heart of this Peak District village.
Set just off the main square, it occupies a former builders’ merchants and coal yard, which traded until 2015. The space has since been transformed with real care, mixing brickwork, wooden furniture, local art and characterful details with a polished modern feel.
Food is the main draw. The menu balances hearty dishes with more refined options, and the kitchen shows a strong eye for flavour, presentation and portion size. On our visit, sharing snacks including roasted almonds, artisan bread, olives and pork scratchings made a strong start, followed by well-cooked roast dinners, burgers and steak.
Drinks are well chosen too, with well-kept ales and a good wine selection. Service is friendly, relaxed and attentive, making The Merchant’s Yard feel comfortable whether you’re calling in for lunch, dinner, drinks or a longer stay.
There’s also a peaceful courtyard and eight boutique bedrooms, making it a useful base for exploring Tideswell and the wider Peak District.
