The Barrel Inn
The Barrel Inn is a traditional oak-beamed country pub, dating back to the 1500s, with stunning views over the Peak District. Delicious dishes, a high-quality drinks list, friendly staff and a stunning setting all make for a fantastic destination.
The interior is classic and charming with vintage photographs adorning the walls, but there are plenty of modern touches too. It’s welcoming and in winter the fires are blazing to keep the chill off and encourage you to stay awhile.
The menu offers classics such as steak and ale pie, pan-fried liver and onions, cod loin and vegetarian forager’s pies. We opted for the chicken breast with broccoli and pickled onions, fish & chips and a side of cauliflower cheese – portion sizes were plentiful and tasted fantastic. For dessert, we had the cheesecake and rosemary crème brûlée – again both delicious. Service is attentive and efficient but relaxed.
If you time it right, you can watch the sunset over the hills from the front of the pub – an experience not to be missed. The pub has some fantastic walking routes and accommodation on-site, too – so why not make a weekend of it?
