The Red Lion at Litton

The Red Lion at has been a pub since the 1700s when it was converted from three miners’ cottages into a coaching inn. Nestled on the green in this picturesque Peak District village of Litton, this is an unspoilt pub that is sadly so rare these days. With its cosy nooks, low beams and roaring fire it’s a perfect spot after a walk in the hills, a long bike ride or a long day at work. The sort of place that brings a village together.

New landlords Kristina and Tomas aim to make it a community hub with events and beer festivals throughout the year. This is a pub famed for its cask ales and is a regular in The Good Beer guide. And with top marks in their Cask Marque assessment, you can be confident in getting a decent pint. They favour local breweries from Derbyshire or South Yorkshire such as Peak Ales or Abbeydale, plus there’s always a guest ale or two.

Head chef Ricky Adams leads the kitchen and uses quality local produce from the surrounding area. Starters include oven-baked camembert, home-cured mackerel and homemade scotch egg. For the main course there are classics like fish & chips or homemade steak & ale pie; as well as Thai curry or sauteed lamb’s liver. And there’s plenty of desserts on offer too, the homemade sticky toffee pudding takes some beating!

It’s busy, so worth booking in advance. It’s worth noting that because of its compact size, under-6s are only allowed on the outside seating. But dogs are welcome inside and out!
