The Grange Cafe & Bar 52, Sedgebrook

The Grange Cafe & Bar 52 is an independent café and bar in Sedgebrook, near Grantham. Set on School Lane in this quiet but well-connected Lincolnshire village, it offers breakfast, brunch, lunch, coffee, wine and relaxed weekend dining, with more to come. Plans for a farm shop, alfresco pizza oven and events make this a place to keep an eye on.

Food is a strength here. Owned and run by Lee Ward and his family, the kitchen is led by Helena, the skilled chef behind Lime House Kitchen of Bottesford, and her cooking brings care, flavour and strong local sourcing. Ingredients come from producers including Sid’s Fruit & Veg in Bottesford, Sherricliffe Farm, Selbee Honey, Peacock Farm, Clive Lancaster Butchers of Bingham and Raw Fruit & Veg of Bingham.

Inside, Bar 52 has an intimate, welcoming feel, with exposed brick, reclaimed timber and floral wallpaper giving it character. There is a pleasant outdoor courtyard too, adding another reason to linger when the weather is on your side. The wine list spans the globe, from crisp Portuguese Vinho Verde to Argentinian Malbec, while the food offering ranges from tapas and charcuterie boards to more substantial dishes.

Sunday lunch is a big draw. Sharing roasts for two include roast beef with goose fat roast potatoes, creamed potatoes, mixed green vegetables, cauliflower cheese, Yorkshire pudding, rich beef gravy and homemade horseradish, or roast pork with stuffing and apple sauce. There is also a vegetarian roast built around a twice-baked cheese soufflé. Desserts such as molten chocolate cake and ginger parkin and blackberry trifle make a strong finish. As roasts are prepared fresh to order, pre-orders and bookings are essential.

The Grange opens Wednesday and Thursday from 9am to 7pm, Friday and Saturday from 9am to 11pm, and Sunday from 9am to 7pm, making it suitable for everything from morning coffee and brunch to relaxed evening drinks. It is also available for private hire.

For Sedgebrook and the wider Grantham area, this is another local independent worth knowing about.
