Hambletons
Headquartered in Oakham, Rutland, Hambleton Farms Fine Foods has four shops in the heart of England: this one at Gates Farm Shop, Cold Overton, plus outlets at Beckworth Emporium in Northants, Doddington Hall in Lincs, and Johnsons Garden Centre near Boston. A small team of bakers, chefs and butchers work with locally sourced produce as much as possible to create enticing and award-winning food.
Hambletons is owned by a local farmer who has land near the Rutland villages of Hambleton, Exton and Cold Overton. They use their own produce as well as sourcing elsewhere to meet demand. They get beef, lamb, pork, poultry and game from a select group of farmers and suppliers who must all go through a strict approval process. Hambletons believe in buying British, and the closer to home, the better.
The deli side of Hambletons offers a vast selection of seasonal cheese including Appleby’s Cheshire and Yorkshire Blue. Hams are steam cooked for 10 hours for moistness and flavour. Beef, turkey and pork are freshly roasted for slicing. Cured meats come from Italy, Spain, Germany and England. Olives are from specialist suppliers Belazu.
A range of ready meals are made in small batches using locally sourced, fresh ingredients and frozen as soon as they have cooled to preserve freshness and flavour. Award-winning pork pies are baked in ‘hoop’ to enable a thinner, crisper pastry. These include duck and orange as well as pork.
