John’s House Restaurant

John’s House is a fine dining restaurant in a charming setting on a family farm. The cooking is creative and of excellent quality, the service is impeccable and the dining experience as a whole is special. In September 2015, John’s House was awarded one Michelin Star.

The setting is a refurbished old family farmhouse on Stonehurst Farm – a pleasant little farm park where visitors can see the animals, visit a classic car museum, buy produce at the farm shop and enjoy a cup of tea and slice of cake in a separate cafe.

John’s House was launched in December 2014 when chef John Duffin returned to his family farm to open his own restaurant after spells with Simon Rogan at Roganic, plus Claude Bosi and Marcus Wareing. John and his team use lots of produce from Stonehurst Farm and the local area, and their menus feature adventurous flavour combinations and nose-to-tail cooking. Stand-out dishes include parsnip dumplings, braised oxtail, madeira and ox tongue; Stonehurst hogget, wood blewits, onions and thyme; crispy pig’s head terrine with confit egg yolk, bacon and parsley; and carrot sorbet, yoghurt, licorice and mint.

  1. Fiona Cownie says:
Excellent food, friendly service in a quirky settingFor our first visit to John's House we went for a birthday lunch on a Saturday, just before Christmas. The restaurant was busy, but staff remained calm and friendly. It is a quirky setting, in a terraced house, with little space in the lounge area, but the staff managed this well; however, it would not suit everyone, as there is no privacy - everyone can hear everyone else's conversation, even if you whisper! Dining is upstairs in the former bedrooms - again, delightfully quirky, but the stairs are steep and narrow, so again would not suit everyone. We had the set menu and found it excellent; interesting, precisely-cooked food. It was a particularly nice touch that even though we were eating at lunchtime, when we had coffee, it was accompanied by home-made chocolates (which is often not the case at other establishments). We thought the set menu was extremely good value for money. We are returning and taking some friends.

OutstandingHave eaten at John's house a few times and the food and service have always been great. Plus, if you can get there at lunchtime you can get a 2-course Michelin starred lunch for about 25 pounds, can't say fairer than that! Most of the produce comes from the family farm where the restaurant is, I think he even grows the herbs himself, so it really is as fresh as local produce can get. I can also heartily recommend the farm tea room's cream teas :)

Johns HouseI wish to echo all the complimentary reviews of Johns House, Mountsorrel and it is a matter of serious regret that although I live only three miles away I cannot climb the steep steps to the restaurant as I am disabled.
  4. Adam Longley says:
Great food. Great service. Great atmosphere. We have been here about half a dozen times now and it's just gets better. For such amazing food there is no air of pomposity or pretentionessness and the greeting is always warm and relaxed. Great little appetisers whilst choosing from the menu are a lovely touch and nothing is too much trouble for them (my wife doesn't eat fish and they created a taster menu for her). The food is just outstanding and the knowledge of the staff about everything they serve is fantastic. Can't wait to go back next time and would recommend wholeheartedly to anybody.

Not impressedDelighted to have a Michelin Star in our ‘hood. We’ve been 3 times now. Service good. Food good but samey. Cost racks up with a decent wine or two. IMO. Not a lot of choice. I ended up having pork every time. Rooms cramped and not private, stairs not suitable for elderly or disabled. Not many reviews ? .... I guess people are reluctant to give a less than favourable opinion.

Celebratory Lunch How special could a Tuesday lunch be ? very special it seems when booked for lunch at John's House. It was our first visit and we were wowed, its so great to have this gem so close. The service was lovely, courteous, attentive and very knowledgable. The food was fantastic and such great value, we all choose three courses followed by the cheese selection, the desert wines chosen for us were superb. No faults, the glass of champagnes on our arrival were the perfect start to a perfect lunch... we also will be back.

Lunch menuWent for a special birthday lunch and weren't disappointed. Superb lunch and great value at £28. Service was excellent too. Will be returning. Motor museum and farm shop were an added bonus to look around afterwards
  9. Bob Drayton says:
Mid week dinnerWe went on a Wednesday evening for dinner. The food and service were exceptionally good. Every dish tasted out of this world and the attention to detail in the presentation was of the highest quality. The dining tables are upstairs and our table, on a landing area near to the waiters station, was a slight disappointment. Maybe the tables in the front room area have a more relaxed ambience? Even so, definitely worth a visit just for the food and excellent service.
  10. MT says:
Great foodVery very good - if it was a bit more relaxed it would get five stars
  11. Dan says:
Tasting menu with matching wineSensational food and drink. Amazing value for 7 courses of food and matching wine with petit fours. The sommelier really elevated the expeience with informed and knowledgeable descriptions. We couldn't recommend this place enough!
  12. Tom says:
OutstandingWe went for an evening meal here (taking up the Great Food Club free glass of champagne offer!) and it was exceptional. We went for the 3-course option rather than the taster menu and could not fault any course. Can't wait to go back for another special occasion.
  13. Heather Dodson says:
Lunch menuJust returned from John's House for our first visit for lunch. We thoroughly enjoyed the food, wine and ambience. The complimentary glass of champagne with the Great Food Card was a real bonus. Service was professional but unstuffy. The menu descriptions gave you an idea of what to expect but there was always a bit of a surprise and a wow factor. Three courses for £28 at a Michelin Star restaurant is amazing value. We will certainly be returning. Can't wait!
